1,000 kilometers of all-electric driving in one day – putting the Aiways U5 SUV through a long-distance test
  • Aiways sends two electric U5 SUVs to the prestigious ED1000 endurance drive in the run-up to the IAA Mobility (Sep 6 -12)
  • Motorsport driver and helicopter pilot Laura-Marie Geissler drives the Aiways U5 SUV from Berlin to Munich
  • Aiways U5 SUV: safe, efficient and comfortable
  • Aiways service partner A.T.U participates with another U5 SUV and acts as the event service partner

Shanghai / Munich, September 1, 2021 – Two standard production Aiways U5 SUVs will be in Berlin on Sunday, September 5 to participate in the ED1000 endurance event. The long-distance drive takes participants 1,000 km across Germany from Berlin to Munich using only battery-electric power to prove that electric mobility is a viable option for day-to-day driving.

Each team must complete the 1,000 km journey to reach Munich within one day of departing Berlin. It is not a race to finish first but a demonstration of the vehicle’s capabilities and a real-life illustration that the Aiways U5 can easily complete such a journey within 24 hours, even with charging stops. In addition to Aiways, many other EV manufacturers will join the event, some with famous celebrities behind the wheel.

One of the standard Aiways U5 SUVs will be piloted by Dr. Alexander Klose, Executive Vice President Aiways Overseas, and a well-known German YouTube blogger and journalist. The second U5 SUV will be driven by Laura-Marie Geissler (23) an aspiring motorsport driver and prospective helicopter pilot. The ED1000 event will be her first experience of driving in a battery-electric vehicle, and she predicts that more time behind the wheel is likely to follow because, for the ambitious City of Starnberg woman, “the future of road travel is electric.”

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of driving more efficiently and using less energy than I usually would during motorsport events,” she continues.

“Off the racetrack, I am always relaxed and thinking ahead, so I am happy to show that I don’t always have to go full throttle,” concluded Geissler.

Dr. Alexander Klose, who has been closely involved with the Aiways U5 SUV since the initial development phase, emphasizes: “Neutral emissions and intelligent technical solutions are development priorities for Aiways, because cars are no longer just a means of transport. As we enter the age of electromobility, cars are expanding our domestic living space. Aiways battery-electric vehicles are designed to serve as an extended, mobile living space.

“The U5 is the first SUV from the young Aiways brand and was designed to offer an affordable entry point into the battery-electric vehicle market. Our owners are enthusiastic, and as we introduce new products to the European market each year, we will quickly draw new customers to the brand.” Klose continues.

Starting from € 35,993*, the Aiways U5 SUV offers a convincing price-performance ratio. It can travel 400 km on just one battery charge, and, for longer journeys, it can recharge the battery from 30% to 80% of its capacity in just 27 minutes. The bright and spacious interior of the Aiways U5 SUV will impress on any journey. Not only does it offer best-in-class space for all passengers, but taller people can enjoy up to 970 mm of legroom in the rear. All safety features of the Aiways U5 SUV are operated easily and intuitively via the large, central infotainment screen, such as the innovative driver assistance systems, including the standard lane departure warning system, the blind spot warning system and the emergency braking assistant.

In addition to the two standard production U5 SUVs taking part in the event, Aiways service and mobility partner A.T.U is participating in the event with another battery-powered Aiways U5 SUV which will be clearly visible in its A.T.U branded red foil wrap. The Weiden-based vehicle specialist is also responsible for the complete service and technical support for all vehicles participating in the endurance drive. A.T.U will carry out check-ups before the start and have a service vehicle that can be used by all participants.

About Aiways

Founded in 2017, Aiways is a Shanghai-based personal mobility provider with its European HQ in Munich, Germany. It was the first Chinese startup to introduce an electric vehicle to the European market with the launch of the U5 in 2020 – a battery-electric SUV with impressive range, style, and quality. Aiways continues its expansion in Europe and beyond: order books are open in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, France, and Israel – with more markets to follow. The U5 is produced at Aiways smart production facility in Shangrao – one of the most modern car production facilities in China. With an initial production capacity of 150,000 units per annum, Aiways can increase this number to 300,000 units when global EV demand rises. Aiways’ next model for Europe will be the U6 electric coupé. With a focus on class-leading aerodynamics, intelligent technology, and sporty design, the U6 investigates the exciting future of the Aiways brand.
